WVRAA MEET OPENS TODAY

Public-private partnership highlights reg’l sports event

ILOILO City – The Division of Iloilo has tapped as partners various groups and individuals for the smooth staging of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet that officially opens today.

Dr. Ma. Janelyn Fundal, secretary-general and co-tournament director, identified some venues of the games as SM City-Iloilo, Plazuela de Iloilo and Gaisano City Mall.

Other civic-minded persons and sports enthusiasts have extended material and financial support to the WVRAA Meet, the premier school-based sports event in Region 6.

Boxing will be staged at Plazuela de Iloilo, taekwondo at Gaisano City activity center, table tennis at SM City-Iloilo activity center, chess beside SM City Iloilo cinema and volleyball at SM City Iloilo parking area, among others.

Ball games, athletics and other events will be contested at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

WVRAA winners will represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa to be held in Dapitan City from May 8 to 14.

GRAND OPENING
An afternoon grand parade marks the start of the WVRAA Meet opening. It will be participated by thousands of competing athletes, coaches, trainers and school officials of various elementary and secondary schools in the region.

The parade starts at 3 p.m. from Jaro Plaza in Jaro district to the Iloilo Sports Complex in La Paz district.

Iloilo Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Raymundo Lapating said teen singer-actor Sam Concepcion, the Department of Education’s ambassador and spokesperson for the youth, will be the guest speaker.

Retired professional basketball player Kenneth Duremdes, former Philippine Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, will deliver an inspirational speech before the athletes.

The athletes and crowd will also be entertained by intermission numbers from child stars Johanna “Kiray” Ismael Celis and Zaijian “ZJ” Jaranilla of giant broadcast network ABS-CBN.

‘FULL FORCE’

Fundal said the Division of Iloilo is expecting a total of 3,200 VIPs, heads, staff, athletes, coaches, chaperones, trainers and cultural competition participants from six provinces – Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Guimaras, Aklan and Negros Occidental.

The billeting areas are as follows:

* Negros Occidental – La Paz 1 Elementary School
* Capiz – Jalandoni Memorial National High School
* Guimaras – Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School
* Aklan – Iloilo Central Elementary School
* Antique – Jaro 1 Elementary School; and
* Iloilo – Iloilo National High School.

Negros Occidental has the biggest delegation with 646; Iloilo, 585; Capiz, 584; Aklan, 582; Antique, 514; and Guimaras with 296.

The Division of Iloilo ensured that each billeting area has its own set of security personnel and focal persons to cater to the needs of the delegations.

Athletes in the elementary level are set to compete in 15 sports events: arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, sipa, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwando, tennis and volleyball.

There will be 14 sports events in the secondary level: archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

UPDATE OF RESULTS

Gilbert Solidum, WVRAA technical coordinator and at the same time the official media spokesperson for the entire event, said unofficial tally and official results will be distributed to the media and likewise posted in the website of the Division of Iloilo at www.depediloilo.net for quick reference on the standings of provinces.

The Regional Office Technical Team Records Center shall distribute the official results twice a day at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The consolidated official results for the day shall be posted in the website and released to the media around 6 p.m.

Solidum said point system shall be applied to determine the standing of each province.

Liza Balogo, WVRAA media coordinator, said there will be focal persons to face queries from the media regarding the results and other information on the sports meet every afternoon, at 3 p.m., at the media center.

The WVRAA Media Center is located at the ground floor of the Iloilo Sports Complex beside the Office of the Commission on Human Rights.

In the same location are the WVRAA Operations Center and Records Center from whence the official results will be released.
